The Threads of Democracy

“The secret to getting ahead is getting started.”
― Mark Twain

As finite beings we are unable to retrace the infinite steps to our own starting point much less to that of our universe. And yet this impossible quest for beginnings preoccupies our hearts and minds whenever we find ourselves in trouble, because in that frightening moment we become convinced that if we can only determine where we "went wrong" then we can "make it right" again.

But there is another approach we can [and sometimes must] take. We can accept the idea that some of our experiences in life must be worn like a "seamless" garment ... without an explainable beginning and without a recognizable end ... and that our task is not to search for THE starting and ending points but merely to pick A starting point ... and to get started ... with faith that, as the old spiritual says,
When true simplicity is gain'd,
To bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd,
To turn, turn will be our delight,

Till by turning, turning we come 'round right.
In that spirit, RAD invites you to think of democracy as a seamless garment composed of different threads which we can understand ONLY IF we are willing to get started and then to take the time to study them. This blog page will highlight some of those threads as we get started in our study of democracy.

Please join us by following the link below to our attempt to fashion a new garment of democracy ... and understand that it will be a work in progress ... but that by working together we may someday "come 'round right" afterall.
